Getting Started
Unpacking
The following steps are recommended for unpacking the PicoZoom microscope the first time:
- Remove all items from the box & place on a clean, dry surface.
- Check contents align with the parts listed below.

(No Accessories are currently available for the PicoZoom microscope)
Connecting the Microscope
- Plug in the coiled power cable into the 6-pin connectors on top of the stand column ❽ and camera arm ❾. Twist the threaded collars to secure the connectors.
- Plug the supplied HDMI cable into the rear of the microscope.
- Connect the other end of the cable to an appropriate monitor (either 1080p@60Hz or 1080p@50Hz).
- Plug in the USB scroll wheel mouse the rear of the PicoZoom Digital Microscope.
- If required (for file saving) connect the supplied USB flash drive to the second USB port.
- Plug in the 12V DC Power Supply and insert the DC jack plug into the socket at the rear of the PicoZoom stand base. Only use the power supply provided with the microscope.
Switching On
- Switch on the power supply.
- Toggle on the red switch on the rear of the PicoZoom stand.
- The LED light on the top of the PicoZoom stand will illuminate green.
- The PicoZoom digital microscope is ready to use.
System Overview - Features
- To increase or decrease the focus tension (resistance), hold the left knob and rotate the right knob to tighten or loosen the controls.
- The stand includes a reversible black/white subject plate. This should be set as required depending on the subject, features, and lighting requirements.
- The subject clamps may be used to hold small subjects.
- Menu navigation is performed with either the supplied mouse, or simple functions can be done using a keyboard (not supplied).
System Overview - Menus
Right 'Click' the mouse to open the Main menu.
Click on the blue arrow buttons at the bottom of the main menu block to more the menu to the left or right hand side on the monitor.
To close the menu click on the blue arrow button closest to the edge of the monitor.
Language Settings
The device supports five language options: English (default), Deutsch, Español, Français and Italiano.
Users can select their preferred language based on their needs and operating environment.
Shortcut
Shortcut Settings (External keyboard)
An external keyboard can be used to trigger camera functions (most USB wired keyboards and USB Bluetooth dongle keyboards are supported).
Users can customise the keyboard settings by assigning key functions according to their preferences and operational requirements.
Other Settings
Tick 'Disable wheel' to disable the mouse scroll wheel zoom control.
'Shortcut Step for Zoom' value controls the step resolution for the mouse scroll wheel zoom. The smaller the value the finer the step resolution. The larger the value the coarser (larger) the step resolution. 1=min (optical 0.05-0.1 steps), 10=max (optical 0.5steps).
USB Flash Drive Recognition
Insert a flash drive into one of the USB ports for capturing images and videos and for saving measurement data files. When a USB flash drive (memory stick) is connected, the USB icon changes from grey to green to indicate a successful connection.
Ensure that the USB flash drive is formatted using the FAT32 file system.
To eject the connected flash drive from the system, left-click the USB icon and click 'Eject Device'
Focus
There are three focus mode options: autofocus (AF), one-touch focus (Click F), and manual focus (MF).
In manual focus mode (MF), drag the slider bar to adjust the camera focus value (0-400).
Clicking the FBL button to switches the camera to manual focus mode and sets the focus value to the parfocal (infinity) position (~200).
In autofocus mode, when the display-area focus frame option is enabled, the focus frame colour changes to the inverse of the set colour during focusing. After focusing is complete, it changes back to the user-set colour.
Focus Settings
Focus Region Settings - In AF mode the Focus Region Setting can be set to 'Global' or 'Local'. In Global mode the system calculates focus over the entire image. Local area model sets the focus based on the focus frame. Users can use the mouse to customize the position and size of the focus frame.
In MF mode the Global, Local and Display Region options are greyed-out and are not editable
Display Region - Users can enable or disable the visibility of focus frame in the display image.
Frame Size Editable - Enable this function to adjust the size of the focus frame. Select and drag the box handles to set the required size. When the frame size has been set, unticking the function box will disable edit and save the set size.
Frame Colour - Click the colour bar to customise and set the focus frame colour. Click OK to confirm and save the colour scheme.
Zoom
Zoom - Use the mouse scroll-wheel or drag the slider bar to adjust the magnification.
Alternatively use the up and down arrows to increase or decrease the zoom by one step increments.
If you click in the zoom level box you can input a zoom level within the available range using the on-screen keyboard.
Zoom Type -
- Actual zoom - Actual zoom magnification is calculated based on Auxiliary objective magnification and display (monitor) size, see 'Zoom Settings' below.
Actual zoom range: 20.7x to 141.7x (based on 1.0 Auxiliary objective and 24" Display Size)
Above figures will vary depending on display size.
- Optical zoom - 0.70x to 4.80x
- Ezoom (digital zoom):
Optical Ezoom range: 5.28x to 28.80x (total range 0.70x to 28.80x)
Actual Ezoom range: 155.9x to 850.1x (total range 20.7x to 850.1x) (based on 1.0 Auxiliary objective and 24" Display Size)
If Ezoom is disabled while the magnification is set within the electronic zoom range, the magnification will automatically revert to the maximum Actual or Optical magnification
Zoom Settings
Multiple Settings
Auxiliary objective - Value should be left as '1.0x'
Display Size - Enter the monitor size being used with the system.
For best accuracy check display actual viewable size.
Activating 'Show Multiple' will display the monitor size and Actual zoom level values set in the upper right corner of the screen.
Activating 'Control Progress Bar' will display the Auxiliary objective and Optical zoom values set in the lower right corner of the screen.
Auxiliary Tools
Pause
When the Pause button is clicked, the displayed image is paused (frozen) and the icon changes to a Play symbol.
Users can still use the measurement tools to perform measurements in this mode.
While the image is paused, camera parameter adjustments and the video recording function is disabled.
Camera
Click the camera button to save a picture of the screen image.
Photo settings, such as picture format, file name and storage location, can be configured in the Settings menu.
Video
Click the Record button to start recording the current screen.
While recording is in progress, a blinking red dot is displayed in the bottom-right corner of the screen to indicate that recording is active.
Click the Record button again to stop recording.
Recording settings, such as video format and storage location, can be configured in the Settings menu.
The maximum size of a single video file is approximately 3.5GB. When this limit is reached, the current video file is automatically saved, and recording continues in a new video file. This will be dependant on capacity of the flash drive and the available/free space on the flash drive.
If a custom filename is used, a numerical suffix is automatically added to the new file name to distinguish it from previous video files.
Auto White Balance (AWB)
White Balance Procedure:
- Place a sheet of white paper (or another plain white target) on the stage.
- Click the AWB button.
- The camera will automatically adjust the image colours based on the white reference target.
Settings
The Administrator Password is required to edit the settings menu.
Default password is 123456
Capture settings
Photo Naming - Naming modes available:
- Auto – Photos are automatically named. A custom prefix can be added.
- Manual – Users enter the photo name manually before saving.
Photo Path - The default save location is /img. Users can create additional folders within this directory and select a custom folder for saving images. Additional folders can be created in the Auxiliary Tools Open folder option.
The following image formats are supported:
- JPG
- BMP
- PNG
- TIFF
Save Graphics - Users can choose whether to save measurement graphics, annotations, and other drawn elements together with the image.
Current magnification information can embed in the captured image. The position and text colour of the magnification information can be customised.
Video settings
Video Naming - Naming method can be set to:
- Auto (automatic naming with user defined prefix) or
- Manual (manual naming)
Video Path - Default saving location is in the 'video' folder of the flash drive. Users may create sub-folders under the video folder through the Open folder menu. New folder path can then be set in the Video Path dropdown box,
Fps (recording frame rate) - 30/60 frames optional
Recording format - currently only .mp4 is supported

Orientation (overlays): Users can import .dwg, .bmp, and .dxf files into the camera for display. bmp images require a white background; otherwise, the displayed image may be abnormal after import.
- Place the positioning file on a USB drive and connect it to the camera. Open Settings - Positioning and select the required line width, colour, and transparency parameters.
- After clicking Select, the USB drive menu opens automatically. Select the corresponding file and double-click it; it will automatically be displayed on the image.
- Users can double-click the left mouse button to close the positioning drawing. To open it again, repeat the above operation.
- Click [Positioning] again to display position adjustment options.
Mirror: On/Off
Flip: On/Off
B/W (Black/White Monochrome): On/Off
CAC (Chromatic Aberration Compensation): On/Off
Power Line Frequency (mains): 50Hz/60Hz select
Default: Restore camera-related function parameters to factory settings
Edit (menu edit): Users can show/hide main menu options and can also reorder the main menu groups. To reorder the menu groups select two options and click the swap button to swap their position.
The Auxiliary Tools menu can not be removed from the main menu
Open (flash drive files)
Open the folder to view saved files on the attached USB flash drive (Image, Video, and Data)
Images
- Users can perform related operations on a single image file. The image thumbnail, name, and size information are shown in the lower-left corner;
- After selecting an image, use the right-click menu to perform operations on a single image: delete, live/static comparison, copy, cut, paste, and rename;
- Right-click a blank area to create a new folder. Users can modify the save path in capture/recording settings as needed;
Videos
- After selecting a video, use the right-click menu to perform operations on a single video: delete, copy, cut, paste, and rename;
- After selecting a video, its name and size information are shown in the lower-left corner;
Data
Users can view the name and size of the exported data list file only
The data in the document can not be viewed on the PicoZoom system. To view the data open the file on a PC.
Data
Displays the current onscreen measurement log table data
Exposure Control
Exposure Mode
Exposure mode options: 'Auto' (automatic) and 'Manual'.
In automatic exposure mode, the brightness value (0-255) can be adjusted with the slider.
In manual exposure mode, click the settings button on the right to adjust the exposure value (0-16.5) and gain value (0-30). The brightness value cannot be adjusted at this time.
LED Control (surface light brightness adjustment)
Drag the slid bar to adjust light brightness (0 off - 200 max)
Click on the LED quadrant image to enable or disable individual quadrants and set the light level independently.
LED Link
Switches all LED ring-light quadrants on/off.
Enabling the Led Link will group all four ring-light quadrants. Adjusting the brightness with the slide bar will adjust all four light zones simultaneously
Scale (calibration):
Calibration Method
- First click 'H Calibrate' or 'Circle Calibrate'.
- Place a calibration tool (such as the calibration plate supplied or a scale slide) on the stage and adjust the image until it is clear.
- Taking 10mm calibration as an example, find the 10mm length in the preview image, determine the start point and end point, and the menu window appears.
- Enter the relevant value, length, and unit according to the actual zoom magnification.
Select calibration and click the delete bin. Enter password to delete calibration record.
The default password 123456

Graphic Data Settings
Unit - Users can set the unit of measure to: cm (centimetre), mm (millimetre), µm (micrometre), inch (inches), mil (thou / thousandth of an inch).
Bits - Decimal display can be set to 0-4 decimal places.
PIP Settings (Picture-in-Picture)
PIP Enable - Click the magnifier button to enable/disable the magnifier picture window to aid accurate mouse positioning (window displays in the bottom right corner of display).
PIP Zoom Multiple - Select required magnification level 2x, 4x, or 6x
Note: Video recording disabled when PIP is enabled
Measurement Tools
- Click the Measurement Mode icon
to enable measurements (icon turns blue).
- Autofocus is disabled in measurement mode.
- Click the Measurement Mode icon again to exit measurement mode (icon turns grey).
- Hover the mouse over an icon to display the tool name.
- Select measurement tool as required.
- AutoEdge
(automatic edge detection) - select function to enable during measurement. The edge closest to the click position is identified and selected. Edge must be within the selection circle.
- Delete All
- select to delete all measurement and graphic data. Click 'OK' to confirm deletion or 'Cancel' to cancel request.
- To delete an individual measurement data/graphic hover over the graphic and double-click the right mouse button. Click 'OK' to confirm deletion or 'Cancel' to cancel request.
- To edit a measurement graphic hover over the graphic and use the right mouse button to move a point or move the graphic
Measurement Settings
General Settings:
Users can individually set the font size/colour, and line width/colour for each tool graphic measurement element.
Object Pattern:
Mode - Select Point or Shape as required. Use Shape detection to automatically snap drawn shapes to polygon edges.
Shape Detection Range (size) - select required range, 10-25. The larger the value, the larger the edge circle size.
Measuring Tools:
The main menu will display 12 measuring tools, the 'Show' tools. Users can replace the shown tools by selecting a shown tool and a hidden tool on the right and click the spat button.
Data List:
To modify the Data table layout select or deselect column headings as required. Column order can be modified by clicking two item names and clicking the swap button.
Custom Template
- Save graphic element data. Click New, enter a custom template name in the text box and then click the Save button.
- Select a template then click the Delete icon to delete the template.
Auxiliary Line (Crosshair/Grid Lines/Scale Lines)
Use the tick boxes to enable or disable crosshair/grid lines
Click the settings button to configure grid lines
Initial Colour - set the grid line colour
Initial Size - set the grid line width (1-3)
HLine / VLine - set the number of horizontal and vertical lines (1-100).
Double-click the right mouse button on a grid line to set the line coordinate position, colour, show/hide scale or set the line angle.
Use the tick boxes to enable or disable Scale bar line
Click the settings button to configure scale bar line
Set the screen position and set the scale bar length (20-900 pixels).
EDF (image stacking)
When image displacement or scaling exists, select “Align” to optimize the final image effect.
- Open the depth-of-field fusion settings menu;
- Click the buttons to set the start and end positions respectively. When confirming the area with the left mouse button, wait for the camera to complete focusing before selecting the end-position area.
- Set the capture interval. Users can customize the value. Value range: 1-99. The smaller the value, the more images are captured and the higher the image quality.
- When image displacement or scaling exists, select “Align” to optimize the final image effect.
- Click “Start”. The camera performs image fusion processing. Wait for the fusion-success pop-up window.
- After fusion is complete, click Confirm. The Return and Synchronous Zoom buttons are displayed in the comparison view on the right (disabled by default);
- Users can view the fused image under the USB drive image path.
- Click “Reset”. The start-position and end-position values all become 1, and the capture interval becomes 2. Users can reselect the start position, end position, and capture interval parameter values.

Routine Maintenance
Cleaning
Disconnect your system from the electrical source before cleaning.
Do not use any unsuitable cleaning agents, chemicals or techniques for
cleaning.
Never use chemicals to clean coloured surfaces or accessories with
rubberised parts.
Use a specialist lens cloth to clean optical surfaces.
Servicing
Repairs may only be carried out by Vision Engineering trained service personnel.
Only original Vision Engineering spare parts may be used

General Safety
Safety
Before using your system for the first time, please read the Health & safety section of the user guide.
Ensure that:
Your system and accessories are operated, maintained and repaired by authorised and trained personnel only.
All operators have read, understood and observe the user manual, in particular the safety regulations.
UV Light
Do not look directly into the illumination source. This may cause damage to eyesight.
When using the UV illumination options the following mitigations are required:
Always wear supplied eye protection when using the UV LED.
Turn off UV LEDs when not in use.
Cover exposed skin when using UV for prolonged periods of time.
Users to perform their own risk assessment for their working environment.
Compliance Statements
Vision Engineering and its products conform to the requirements of the EC Directives on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS).
All Vision Engineering products conform to the CE mark, demonstrating that each product meets the requirements of the applicable EC directives.

Health & Safety
Disconnect your system from the electrical source before undertaking any maintenance.
Do not disconnect the power cable when the camera is on, or connect the power cable when the mains supply is on.
Avoid using any form of liquid near the system.
Do not operate your system with wet hands. Illumination safety:
Do not look directly at the illuminated LED’s. This may cause damage to the eyesight.
Warranty
This product is warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one year from the date of invoice to the original purchaser.
If during the warranty period the product is found to be defective, it will be repaired or replaced at facilities of Vision Engineering or elsewhere, all at the option of Vision Engineering. However, Vision Engineering reserves the right to refund the purchase price if it is unable to provide replacement, and repair is not commercially practicable or cannot be timely made. Parts not of Vision Engineering manufacture carry only the warranty of
their manufacturer.
Expendable components such as fuses carry no warranty.
This warranty does not cover damage in transit, damage caused by misuse, neglect, or carelessness, or damage resulting from either improper servicing or modification by other than Vision Engineering approved service personnel. Further, this warranty does not cover any routine maintenance work on the product described in the user guide or any minor maintenance work which is reasonably expected to be performed by the purchaser.
